May 2017 Wrap Up

Hello Fellow Book Lovers!

The following are the books I read during the month of May! Only managed to get four books read this month, which is not horrible but certainly not as good as I wanted the month to be.

  1. Emma by Jane Austen: I was entertained by this book. Not my favorite Austen though. I enjoyed how we got to see Emma evolve as a character and mature through the friends she made and the things that went on in her community. I felt this could certainly have been a bit shorter had Austen wanted. Plot-wise I did not enjoy the decision that Austen made with regards to what to do with Emma’s friend Miss Smith. I felt she was ill used purely for the benefit of Emma and that just annoyed me a bit, she ultimately became a bit throw-away. Mr. Knightley was great, but no Mr. Darcy. (3.5*)
  2. Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: This book was amazing and my favorite of the past month. It was intriguing, mysterious, striking, suspenseful, atmospheric, gripping and just a damned good story. The main character frustrated me at times but mostly because I wanted her so desperately to be more assertive but I loved getting to see her slowly get to that point. Ms. Danvers was probably one of the creepiest characters I have ever read. Throughout the novel we don’t ever get to know the first name of the narrator and I think that’s greatly symbolic of the power that Rebecca still has over the life of the estate and it’s inhabitants. Read it! (5*)
  3. Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling: My favorite baby angel and I will always love it. Always 5*.
  4. Sally Ride: America’s First Woman on Space by Lynn Sherr. This book was super fun and engaging. It was great to learn so many unknown things about such an amazing woman. I recommend this for anyone who loves to learn about science, history, strong women, wants to get into non fiction, feminists, NASA lovers, and just anyone wanting to learn. I thought this was a great book and it was great to listen to on audio as well.
